Grab a drink, put your feet up and let a story take you somewhere a little darker... ![]() by Julie I descend the multitude of steps, to the underground of the castle, counting the portraits of my masters hung on the walls, with their scowling face glaring into mine. As I reach the dungeons, my only companion is the dark, and the shrieks of the prisoners as they louden, and their cries for help become more urgent. ‘Guards! Guards! The princess demands the prisoners to stop their howling!” My screams were only welcomed by the wails at the end of the hall, with no reply from the guards. ‘Guards!” I run up a couple of steps to the nearest torch, and with difficulty take it out of its holder, and return to the icy hallway. I shine my torch down both paths of the hallways, and can only see empty cages. I slowly step towards the direction of the cries for help, with the torch leading my way forward. As the ear-splitting howls echo in the empty hallway, and the words spoken by the convicts become more understandable, the endless blackness’ hostile nature sparks terror in my thoughts, as my palms sweat and my mind dives into the most unrealistic conclusions. My eyes scour through the infinite night in the dungeons, for any source of answer to this ill-natured force, until I am greeted by an object on the floor. I shine my torch closer to it, but not before it drops out of my sweaty hands and onto the hard concrete floor, joining the continuing sound of the voices spoken by the damned. What appears before me, is an un-natural creature, surely not one created by God, but rather by the likes of Satan. Yes, he who sits on his throne of bones in the land of the cursed, and laughs at the cries of the innocent, and feels joy at the sound of dripping blood from any. This creature may once have served the King as a Guard, but is no longer. His skin is a sickly pale colour, with red veins gleaming at his forearms and face. His face, oh, what nightmares would result at a single glance at this creature’s face. His lips, the colour of the darkness around me, with slits cut open and blood dripping down his chin. His cheeks, once flushed with the cold of the castle, now left with scratches, with green lumpy ichor flowing out, combining with the blood to form a colour, darker than night. His eyes, or what once were eyes, lay not on his face, but on the floor beside him. I jumped up, darting my eyes away from the fallen man, fearing to see anything else, and grab my torch from the floor. I jump over the body, running away from the danger, from the devil’s smile of pleasure and his demons’ laugh. I stop running, when I start to see the very last cell, with rough hands gripping and pushing the bars. The screams now seem to be directed to me, as the prisoners yell my name, urging me to come closer, to free them. I shine my light upon their faces, as they retreat from the sudden light. “Lord, please forgive me for my unholy acts of violence! Please…” “HELP! HELP! OH PLEASE! HELP!” “Sir! Help us! Save us from this fright!” The group of people pressed their faces in between the bars, looking back at times to the darkness within their cells, fearing whatever lurks inside. “Quieten down!” I shout, stepping back from them, as they reach their hands out attempting to grab my robes. “No! No! Please! God forgive me! I have tasted my piece of Hell! Please!” screamed one of the men, with his hands pressed together and tears streaming down his already wet face. His brown robes have been ripped, and stained with some of dark liquid. His palms were covered in marks of stones, and dry brown blood. “Wh- What?” I was left confused, as I realized that the others were in worse state that the first man, some with deadly knife cute on their arms and faces. I shone my torch deeper into the cell, only to issue a loud demonic roar ring through the hallway, making the horrid sound repeat itself over and over. “Don’t! Don’t! You anger him!” The howls of the convicts worsened, and their tears only increased, as their words and prayers rung in my ears. I couldn’t think with the darkness toying with my mind, and the dreadful sounds repeating themselves in my thoughts. I stepped back, which issued a deadly silence from the prisoners. Their pleading eyes darted away from mine, to the roof above me. They seemed frozen, with their arms stretched out, and their faces paralyzed. Never was a silence louder, never was pain more present and never was fear more audible than on this night. I felt two strong, large hands tighten on my shoulders, and the feel of an icy breath on my face. “Now, who’s come to join me?”
